I'm glad to hear that security costs are unsustainable, even given U.S. aid and profitable spin-offs. And I guess that U.S. aid doesn't change that, since that money is geared to come back to the MIC.

No. I didn't go into it in the review but one of Hever's point was that the security costs are increasing at such a rate that there current status quo can't continue quite apart from reasons to do with imperial concerns or Palestinian well-being -- that the costs themselves will be overwhelming and will have to be resolved, so either Israel will collapse, it will "end" the occupation in a passive revolution/elite transformation, it will expel the Palestinians, or we will somehow end iot via external pressure and a progressive transformation/decolonization of Israeli society.

Can the "security costs" be separated from a total picture of the Israeli military-industrial complex, U.S. aid, and the import/export economy that that facilitates?

Your analysis is closely argued. However, Netanyahu detests Obama and fears Iran, both - from a Zionist viewpoint - quite reasonably. If Obama gets a 2nd term, a he will turn HardLeft and make life even more difficult for Israel; Romney, on the other hand, is encapsulated by neo-con advisors. So Israel will certainly attack Iran sometime before the November U.S. elections; I'd guesstimate c. late August/early September...sufficient lead time to spike and maintain oil prices high enough/long enough to bring down the Obama regime. In fact, Obama knows that the IranWar is inevitable and proximate: minesweepers are being shipped to the zone of operations as I write this. That is the Sign.

When will Uncle Sam cease indulging and enabling the ultra-violent behavior patterns of its protege, which for many years has appeared to be totally beyond rehabilitation? The USA should be exercising strong leadership by notifying Israel that all financial and military aid and cooperation are totally suspended until Israel withdraws to its pre-'67 borders and sets the essential example of nuclear disarmament, without which the Middle East will never been a safe neighborhood for anyone.

The initial link stopped working shortly after it was posted, and I heard that was what happened. I do not recall (and don't care), if someone added that he had in retrospect decided it was too destructive or not. And yes, it seems a perfectly fair thing to say. And finally, some of us are quite willing to engage Finkelstein on the strength of his arguments (for example, here http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/2012/ajl240112.html). What this kind of dismissive and destructive intervention does, is make it that much harder to engage him on his arguments, creating more space for people who just wave around an equally sectarian liberal anti-Zionism. Them, we do not entirely appreciate either.

"apparently" "apparently Finkelstein asked initially that it be taken down"? ...yet you're sure of his thoughts? "as he realized it was destructive"? Do you think that's a fair and responsible thing to write? Especially as it was the first and only thing you wrote? Norman will tell anybody on any other day his thoughts EXACTLY as he expresses them here. He does so openly in public and stands by it. And of course you're going to get a lot of crazy people putting this up on their sites, note that they are edited with only the firecracker soundbites from the "professor of the left". Can you be positive here and now that he asked that it be taken down? When and to whom exactly? Frank Barat himself? Directly after the camera stopped rolling? "Oh, hang on. You know what ...my words are probably too destructive. This whole exchange is just too destructive. The people wont understand."??? He'll say the same exact thing tomorrow and the next day and the day after that. Not because he likes the sound of his own voice but because, what nobody on the right or so-called left can understand, he is interested in a just and lasting peace.

The author speaks as though the P.A. were able to enjoy the sovereignty of a nation with the capacity to set its own strategy, confident in its ability to follow through. The reality is that the P.A. is the elected parliament of a society that exists at the pleasure of its colonial overlord, who continues to be pumped up and armed by the world's only super power. Said superpower has declared policy of benign abandonment of this helpless entity to the outcome of its attempts to negotiate with the giant whose boot is on its neck. Beyond rhetoric, how would Mr. Khalidi respond to such a hellacious predicament?

this is timely and it's based on atzmon's inclusion in gm2j-na. in europe we've had to deal with the atzmon phenomenon for quite some time and he's served as a useful litmus test to single out the rightwing populists or politically incompetent (his sanctuary in germany is still in dr. weber's cafe palestina in freiburg, though i'm sure he'd find succor with and nazis who aren't too busy masturbating over the iof).

but what about this: yesterday 100 people from the asian gm2j convoy decided to do a lovely little photo op and press conference with ahmadinejad and co.

i'm very disappointed to see the role that our gfm's feroze is playing here. great way to buoy the concept of 'popular resistance'. it seems the left may have arrived too late to this party. i'm afraid i don't know what the right course of action is now for all the rest who have signed up. it's already bogged down in the usual morass of coalition-building and vip signature collection, but with this press conference it's becoming increasingly unclear how this ship is being steered or what kind of consensus exists, if any... i'm worried that these sycophantic excesses will ultimately cost the palestinians in blood.
